Traditional Parental Skills

We would all like to be "perfect parents". This is impossible as we learn by experience. Have you heard of the "Good Enough Parent"? If you think that good enough is not enough, you will have to debate this with yourself and your partner. A good enough parent is just what your children need. Parents need to do their best in the circumstances that they happen to be experiencing at that time.

There is no judgement to be put on a parenting style, but there is one on the children's well being and happiness.

There are many different activities that can help you attain the parenting skills you aim for, or simply give you ideas and solutions to problems you encounter.

Some are described below.

A Dad's Traditional Role

Our parenting style is a reflection of the parenting we received as children. The male role model you had a small child and in early adulthood gave you and idea of what a father should be like. Some young men sometimes feel their father did not answer their view of what a father should be, on the other hand, some also see the good things their father accomplished or gave them as teachings. It is up to you to take the positive essence from the role models you had throughout your years.

In traditional Cree teachings, a child's spirit chooses both parents. It means that, even though someone is not the biological father to his child, the child's spirit decides who will be their dad. That creates a responsibility and an opportunity to develop a relationship and positively influence the child's life.
